Managed Dedicated Server Hosting (2026): Best Picks, Priced per Core and per GB
Managed dedicated server hosting costs roughly one and a half to two and a half times as much as renting the same machine self-managed. Liquid Web's fully managed 4-core Xeon with 16 GB of RAM is $205.70 a month on a two-year term, while its self-managed bare-metal version of that CPU is $88. If you want someone else patching and watching the server, Liquid Web is the most fully documented managed option we found and Hostwinds is the cheapest managed starting point at $71 a month before options. If you can run the server yourself, Hetzner's AX42 (8 cores, 64 GB) at $117.10 a month plus a $59 setup fee is the best all-round value: near the cheapest of the regularly priced servers here on both price per core and price per gigabyte, on a current-generation CPU, and IONOS rents 4-core Xeons from $47 a month with no contract. All prices date from 9-12 Oct 2026, before tax.
This guide is for teams that have outgrown a large VPS, or need single-tenant hardware for compliance, and want to compare dedicated offers on the units that matter. If you're not sure you've outgrown a VPS, read our VPS vs dedicated server guide first: most projects haven't.
Quick picks by need
- Fully managed, with backups and cPanel included: Liquid Web, from $205.70 a month on a 2-year term (4 cores, 16 GB).
- Managed on a smaller budget: Hostwinds, $71 a month for a 4-core Xeon E3-1270 v3 before RAM and other options.
- Best all-round value, self-managed: Hetzner AX42, $117.10 a month plus $59 setup (8 cores, 64 GB DDR5 ECC). Hetzner pays us nothing.
- Cheapest month-to-month, self-managed: IONOS L-16, $47 a month (4 cores, 16 GB, HDD) or $51 with SSDs, cancel anytime.
We haven't benchmarked these servers. Rankings here rest on published specifications and prices, normalised to price per physical core and per gigabyte of RAM, plus what each provider says its management covers. Core counts come from the vendor pages, or from the chip maker's specification where a page doesn't state one (Hetzner's AX41).
Price per core and per GB of RAM
A dedicated server's sticker price hides huge differences in what you get. Dividing the monthly price by physical cores, and separately by gigabytes of RAM, turns ten different spec sheets into two comparable numbers. The chart covers entry and mid configurations from four providers whose prices we could read from the US.
The arithmetic is simple enough to redo when prices move. Hetzner's AX42 is $117.10 for 8 cores and 64 GB: $14.64 a core and $1.83 a gigabyte. IONOS's L-16 SSD is $51 for 4 cores and 16 GB: $12.75 a core but $3.19 a gigabyte, because RAM is thin on its entry boxes. Liquid Web's managed E-2134 is $205.70 for 4 cores and 16 GB: $51.43 a core and $12.86 a gigabyte. Hetzner's AX41 limited offer, $67.10 with no setup fee for a 6-core Ryzen 5 3600 and 64 GB, is the cheapest on both counts while it lasts.
Two cautions. Price per core says nothing about how fast each core is: IONOS's entry Xeons are the Kaby Lake generation, by IONOS's own label, and Hostwinds' E3-1270 v3 is older still, while Hetzner's AX42 uses a Zen 4 Ryzen. And the managed premium isn't spread evenly: Liquid Web's 16-core 6526Y works out at $36.07 a core, far less than its 4-core entry box, so management costs proportionally less on bigger machines.

Contabo also rents AMD Ryzen and EPYC dedicated servers, but on 12 Oct 2026 its site blocked our US-based price check, so we have left its prices out rather than quote figures we couldn't confirm. Check Contabo's current dedicated prices before you compare. ScalaHosting's dedicated-server address now leads to its cloud VPS page, which fits the 'big VPS instead' route further down.
Managed vs unmanaged dedicated: what the extra buys
On a self-managed box you get the hardware, a network connection and someone to replace failed parts. Everything above the hardware is your job: the operating system, updates, the firewall, backups, monitoring and recovery. Hetzner's AX42 includes root access, a rescue system, a 24-hour reset service, DDoS protection, a firewall and free phone and email support; IONOS adds 24/7 support, a KVM console and an optional Plesk licence for $5 a month. Neither will log in and fix your web stack for you.
On a managed dedicated server, the provider takes over that layer. Liquid Web's managed plans list proactive monitoring and updates, 24/7 support from engineers, ServerSecure hardening, built-in DDoS protection, a cPanel licence, a dedicated IP address and 500 GB of Acronis backup space, plus a 99.99% uptime guarantee and a 30-minute hardware replacement SLA. Its team also handles migration onto the server. Hostwinds calls its dedicated servers fully managed and includes server monitoring, and its configurator lets you choose RAID level, drives and RAM.
Is the premium worth it? Compare the same CPU both ways. Liquid Web's E-2134 costs $88 a month self-managed (after a $44 first two months) and $205.70 managed on a two-year term, a gap of $117.70 a month. Part of that gap is software you'd otherwise buy: cPanel's only licence tier for dedicated servers, Premier, costs $69.99 a month bought directly, covering up to 100 accounts. The rest pays for someone else's time. If nobody on your team is comfortable patching a Linux server at 2 a.m., that is cheap. If you already run servers, it isn't.
Setup fees, contract terms and bandwidth caps
Setup fees. Hetzner raised its setup fees in 2026: $59 on the AX42 and $149 on the AX102, while some limited-offer servers such as the AX41 carry none. IONOS and Liquid Web don't list a setup fee on the pages we read. A setup fee matters most if you might leave within a year, because it's a sunk cost spread over fewer months.
Contract terms. Liquid Web discounts managed servers 15% for a two-year term and 10% for one year, with monthly billing also available; the managed prices above are the two-year rates. Its bare-metal servers are half price for the first two months, then full price. IONOS's value dedicated line is cancel-anytime. Hetzner bills monthly. Read the term before you compare, because a two-year managed price and a month-to-month self-managed price aren't like for like.
Bandwidth. Hetzner and IONOS include unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbit/s port. On a 10 Gbit/s uplink both include 20 TB a month, after which Hetzner charges $1.20 per TB and IONOS $0.0047 per GB, or $4.70 per TB. Liquid Web's plans include 10 TB on the entry servers. For most websites none of these is a constraint; for video or large downloads, the 1 Gbit/s unmetered option is the safest.
Extra costs to budget for. Hetzner lists dedicated prices excluding VAT and the IPv4 address, which is $1.90 a month. IONOS includes one IPv4 address and charges $5 a month for each extra one, $5 for Plesk and from 6.5 cents per GB a month for backup storage. A Windows Server licence on IONOS dedicated hardware is $38 a month for 4 to 8 cores, rising with core count.
Dedicated web hosting and dedicated IP addresses
If your goal is dedicated server web hosting for a handful of busy sites, the server you rent comes with its own IP address in every case here: Liquid Web lists a dedicated IP on its managed plans, IONOS includes one IPv4 address, and Hetzner provides one for $1.90 a month. That makes a dedicated server the simplest way to get a dedicated IP address for web hosting, but it's an expensive way to get only that. A VPS also comes with its own IPv4 address for a few dollars a month. Most sites don't need a unique IP at all now that TLS certificates work fine on shared addresses.
Dedicated vs a big VPS: when not to buy dedicated
A large VPS is often the better buy, and the numbers show why the decision is close. Hostwinds' unmanaged Linux VPS with 8 CPUs and 32 GB is $124.99 a month, more than Hetzner's dedicated AX42 with 8 physical cores and twice the RAM at $117.10. DigitalOcean's 8-vCPU, 16 GiB Droplet is $96. On paper, dedicated wins at that size. But a VPS provisions in minutes, resizes without a migration and, at most providers, bills by the hour or second. A dedicated server can take longer to deliver, may carry a setup fee and changes size only by moving to new hardware.
Compare cores carefully, too. On most VPS plans a vCPU corresponds to a processor thread rather than a whole physical core, and on shared plans it may be shared with other customers, so 8 vCPUs and 8 dedicated cores aren't equivalent. If you need a managed environment rather than raw cores, ScalaHosting's managed VPS is $29.95 a month in its first year, then $54.95, and its largest standard build is $94.95, renewing at $244.95. See ScalaHosting's managed VPS. Our best VPS hosting page ranks the self-managed options.
Choose dedicated when you can name the reason: sustained full-CPU load for hours, a database that needs every gigabyte of RAM and all the disk I/O, a compliance requirement for single-tenant hardware, or steady traffic a large VPS can't hold. Otherwise, start on a VPS and move when your monitoring shows the ceiling.
Edge cases
Compliance. If you handle card data or health data, the hosting provider's certifications matter as much as the hardware. Liquid Web is a PCI DSS Level 1 service provider and publishes PCI-ready dedicated bundles from $354 a month, and says its data centres are regularly assessed for HIPAA, PCI DSS and GDPR. Ask any provider for its attestation before you sign.
Windows. Windows Server adds a monthly licence fee on dedicated hardware just as it does on a VPS, and IONOS notes that Hyper-V can't be used as a hypervisor on its dedicated servers because of Microsoft licence terms.
Location. Hetzner offers the AX42 in Falkenstein, Germany, and Helsinki, Finland. IONOS's value dedicated servers are in the US, the UK, Germany, Spain and France. Liquid Web has US, European and Australian data centres. If your users are in North America, Hetzner's low prices come with added latency.
Older hardware. Cheap dedicated servers are often previous-generation CPUs. That's fine for many workloads, but check the CPU model, drive type and RAID setup rather than buying on core count alone.
